Work the glass yourself
The home page walks one piece of glass from batch to showroom. These are the instruments behind it, each opened up so you can push it past where the page stops: bend light through it, blow it, cool it atom by atom, melt your own colors, and check every number against its source.
- refraction, ray by ray Light Lab Rake a beam across a dark table through prisms and lenses of seven glasses, each ray bent by its own index.
- viscosity at the pipe Forming lab Keep a gather on the pipe: viscosity from a measured glass, sag, blowing and cooling computed.
- the glass transition, with atoms Structure lab Cool a liquid of 400 atoms fast or slow and watch it lock into a glass or order into a crystal.
- real silicate glass, atom by atom Network lab Turn over and slice three thousand atoms of simulated silica and soda glass: the random network, its broken bridges and its rings.
- Beer–Lambert by hand Mixing lab Melt up to four colorants, set the wall thickness, and see the color the batch would make.
- where the numbers come from Library Every datasheet, standard table and measurement the site computes from, and what each license allows.
Each piece is a real melt from the site's colorant table, computed under daylight like every other color here: cobalt, gold ruby, trace iron, chromium, copper with cadmium sulfide (and both together where they overlap), neodymium.
